Grace

A friend of mine shocked me one day when he said, "I have never been treated fairly by God. He never gives me a fair shake." When he saw the look on my face, he added, "And I thank him for that every day. I need his grace, not his justice."

That question started me to thinking about grace, and the fact that I really did not fully understand what it is. We all say that we want justice - getting what we deserve -, that is until we do something wrong. Then we want grace - getting what we don't deserve. I tend to want justice for other people, but give me grace.

I am a Christian, therefore this article is written from the Christian perspective. I believe the "Golden Rule" of the Bible, "Do for others what you would like them to do for you"1 is a command to share God's grace with others. If we want grace, shouldn't we extend grace to others? Interestingly enough, all major religions (Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism) have their version of the Golden Rule.
